A revealing documentary investigating the Catholic clergy molestation crisis in New Orleans has just received the honor for outstanding film at the Winter Park cinema event.
Titled “God As My Witness,” the film makes clear that those who commit these crimes cannot hide, while giving an outlet to victims and seeking justice.
Screenings of the film at the festival in the start of the month reportedly sold out, with several attendees visibly affected by the story.
Directed by a New Orleans native and produced by Michael Brandner Sr, the detailed project builds on firsthand accounts, including the uncovering of written messages written by a priest recognized of abuse.
The account features numerous individuals who endured mistreatment while living in religious households in the area.
Additionally, the feature covers the bankruptcy situation encountered by the local archdiocese, which entered bankruptcy protection in recent years due to multiple claims of clergy abuse.
Through recent reports, the bankruptcy case continues to be unresolved, though over 600 of claimants are in the process of voting on a offered settlement totaling $230 million.
The director and producer received the award on September 7. Michael Brandner stated that witnessing survivors take part in the recognition was powerfully touching.
“They evolved from someone harmed to someone who endured to hero,” Brandner expressed. “It was profoundly impactful.”
Prior to the Colorado screening, the film received nominated for a major award at the London-based event in June.
It has also was shown at a festival in Portugal, where it was permitted to be presented in a sacred setting by a local cardinal.

Looking ahead, the feature is potentially planned to screen at the local cinema event in the fall season.
