Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson disclosed he came dangerously close to a potentially fatal accident during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two marshals crossed the track immediately ahead of his car
The alarming incident happened on the third lap when safety workers were spotted on the circuit as Lawson was rejoining the race following an premature pit stop to replace his damaged front wing
Immediately after, Racing Bulls driver Lawson communicated to his race engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you witness that? I nearly... ended their lives"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was witnessing"
"I rejoined with a brand new hard tyres, and then I got to Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two dudes dashing across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, frankly, it was incredibly risky"
"Evidently there's been a miscommunication somehow but I've never encountered that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"
"We can't understand how on a live track track officials can be allowed to just run across the track in such a way. I don't understand the reason, I'm sure we'll get some sort of explanation, but this must never be repeated"
The sport's regulatory authority, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is currently investigating the events
"Following a turn one incident, track officials was advised that debris was present on the track at the turning point of that curve" stated the governing body
"On lap three, track officials were notified and made ready to go onto the racing surface and recover the debris once every vehicle had gone by"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had entered the pits, the orders to send personnel were rescinded and a caution signal was raised in that area"
"The examination is ongoing what occurred subsequent to that time"
