The Fianna Fáil nominee exited the Irish presidential election just weeks ahead of the election

The Fianna Fáil nominee Jim Gavin has declared he is pulling out from the race for Ireland's head of state with "immediate effect".

He was set to be a candidate among three vying for Ireland's head of state, beside Independent TD Catherine Connolly and Fine Gael's Heather Humphreys.

Nonetheless, Sunday night he said via a statement that he "erred inconsistent with his values and his personal standards."

"Considering all these factors, I've chosen to exit the presidential race immediately and return to the arms of my family," he stated via a statement.
