Kristi Noem Tours Portland Immigration and Customs Enforcement Facility With Right-Wing Figures

Kristi Noem, currently serving as the DHS secretary, visited the federal immigration enforcement location in Portland on a recent weekday. On site, she saw firsthand a limited demonstration outside, which stands in stark contrast to the dramatic "blockade" described by Donald Trump.

Joined by Right-Wing Media Figures

Noem was escorted by a trio of conservative influencers who were whisked from the airport to the facility in her motorcade. DHS has published more aggressive digital updates showing federal officers performing raids and firing crowd control measures at protesters.

Gathering Outside

Officers secured the area outside the ICE office in the city’s south waterfront neighborhood before the secretary’s visit. A handful demonstrators, among them one wearing a costume of a fowl and another as a shark, were maintained behind barriers.

A song blared from a protest encampment nearby, with lyrics mentioning the former president and controversial documents. One protester called out to a official camera operator recording from the top of the building, questioning whether the DHS had been renamed the "information ministry".

Press Coverage

Members of the press from independent media organizations were also restricted to the security perimeter outside, while the MAGA-aligned figures in the secretary's group—the conservative trio—shared digital content of the secretary participating in federal agents in prayer inside, giving a encouraging words, and advising a soldier of the state guard to "Get ready".

Background Developments

Governor Noem has previously echoed the Trump's assertions that the small band of protesters—who have gathered in their limited groups outside the site since the summer, including one in an amphibian suit—are "terrorists" who have placed the facility "besieged", making the deployment of government forces critical.

Yet, on a recent weekend, a U.S. judge in Oregon halted his effort to bring under federal control local militia, stating that the president’s allegations that the generally nonviolent city was "burning to the ground" were "not based on reality".

Following that, the same judge, Karin Immergut—who was appointed to the court by Trump—expanded her order to prohibit National Guard troops from other states from being sent in the city. She acted after the former president answered to her initial ruling by attempting to send members of the another state's militia to Portland.

Increased Confrontations

After Donald Trump drew attention the modest but continuous protest outside the office and made false claims that Portland is "battle-scarred", a rising count of his adherents, including conservative personalities, have appeared to challenge the individuals.

Several of these clashes have caused altercations and fistfights, leading to arrests by the Portland police. One influencer was among those arrested after he sought to enter a gathering on a walkway near the office and was part of an altercation over an U.S. flag. Sortor had previously taken the flag from a individual who was destroying it.

The charges against Sortor were eventually dismissed after an outcry in right-wing outlets prompted the chief of the civil rights division of the Justice Department, the division head, to threaten an investigation of the Portland Police Bureau over supposed partisan treatment.

Two individuals Sortor was detained over a conflict with still face charges.

Official Responses

On Sunday, Governor Tina Kotek, Tina Kotek, claimed DHS agents in the site of trying to irritate the crowds by using disproportionate amounts of chemical irritants in a populated area and inviting partisan figures to record the gathering from the roof of the building. "They are clearly trying to antagonize the crowds," the governor stated.

Several of those conservative influencers were referred to in a official record last month as "opposing demonstrators" who "constantly return and antagonize the protesters until they are attacked or exposed to irritants" and resist "frequent warnings from police to avoid" the protesters.

Online Content

A conservative personality, a ex-reporter who transitioned as a Christian nationalist influencer after being let go from BuzzFeed for content theft, shared a clip of Noem looking down from the top of the ICE facility at the limited number of protesters below, including an individual who sports a fowl suit to taunt Donald Trump. He described the footage of her viewing the calm environment below: "Governor Noem faces off against radicals and a chicken-clad individual".

Regardless of the difference between the claims from Trump and Noem that this facility is "encircled" from "radicals" and visible proof of a handful of individuals in non-threatening attire, the influencers with her continued to refer to the protesters as dangerous radicals.

Meeting with Police Chief

During her visit, the secretary also held a discussion with the Portland police chief, the chief, who has been portrayed as "politically correct" in right-wing outlets for authorizing his officers to apprehend Sortor. In a online post on the meeting, Johnson claimed that the official had "sided with violent ANTIFA militants assaulting journalists and officers outside ICE facility".

Noem’s motorcade then drove out the facility past a small group of protesters on the nearby road, including one in the costume of a bear wearing a sombrero.
