Comey has maintained his innocence regarding the charges

Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation director James the ex-FBI chief has denied the charges to providing misleading information to lawmakers and obstructing a lawmaking procedure.

His attorney entered the response representing him in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

Patrick Fitzgerald announced he would try to have the case terminated for several reasons including that his the accused, a detractor of former President Trump, was being singled out.

The former director was indicted shortly after Trump urged his chief prosecutor to take action against him.

Legal Proceedings

At the proceedings on mid-week, Comey's lawyer Mr Fitzgerald told the court they planned to file various legal requests to terminate the case before a trial, arguing the prosecution was retaliatory and that a federal prosecutor was wrongfully appointed to handle the case.

The former director's case was originally overseen by Erik Siebert, who left his position under scrutiny from the former president after his investigation into a different opponent - New York Attorney General Letitia James - was unable to file indictments.

Judicial Environment

Mr Comey seemed in good spirits as he walked into the legal venue on mid-week, speaking with his lawyers and being lighthearted. He was joined by his spouse, his wife and daughter his daughter, a government attorney who the former government dismissed.

Upon hearing to the court state his constitutional guarantees and the two counts against him in the courtroom on Wednesday, Mr Comey was inquired if he grasped the allegations.

"Yes your honour. Thank you very much," he stated to the court.

Background Context

The former director was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013-2017 and was terminated about four months into the former president's first term as national leader. At the moment, the director was directing an investigation into international campaign influence and whether there were any connections between Russia and the election effort.

Throughout his leadership, Mr Comey sparked a negative reaction from liberal politicians when he announced just shortly prior to the 2016 presidential election that he was examining presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Charges against Clinton were not pursued, resulting in disapproval from the Republican party as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Prosecutors assert James Comey lied to US lawmakers during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in recent years when he was being interrogated about both the previous examination as well as the Russia election probe. They allege he misled the Senate by claiming he had not approved an individual at the agency to leak to media organizations details about the agency probes.

Government lawyers also allege Mr Comey of "wrongfully trying to influence, block and impede" the committee by providing untrue information to it.

Individual Responses

Through a recording the former director posted to his social media after he was charged, he declared he was innocent and alleged Trump of behaving like a "autocrat".

"My family and I have known for a long time that there are consequences to challenging Mr Trump," he commented. "We choose not to live on our kneeling."
"I'm innocent," he continued. "Therefore proceed with a court case."

The charges against Mr Comey emerged after Donald Trump shared on social media demanding his attorney general, the attorney general, take legal action against James Comey and other people.
