The England head coach shared his sadness that the England team did not get stronger support from the Wembley spectators during their impressive 3-0 friendly victory on Thursday night.
Tuchel was satisfied to see his side maintain their winning momentum, with goals from Rogers, Ollie Watkins, and Bukayo Saka inside the opening quarter deciding the game. But, he was not content with the mood at the national stadium.
“With limited sessions to get ready against a well-trained team and we did very well,” the coach commented. “We could have been five goals ahead at half-time. We missed the fourth and fifth goals. There was little noise. There was no support back from the stands. We did everything to win.”
“How much more can you provide in 20 minutes? We didn’t let them get away. When you only hear just Wales fans for half an hour, it’s sad because the squad deserved better encouragement today.”
“I maintain my words. There’s nothing more than being three goals up in a derby. I hoped for a little more backing in moments where it becomes tough.”
“In the second half, to cheer us on, there was a bit too much backing for the opposition. It might have aided us to refocus, but it is what it is and that is it.”
Away from potentially starting a dispute among supporters, the manager also caused a stir by omitting Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden from his squad. However the decision was validated by Rogers excelling in the No 10 position and netting his first international goal.
“He is what he is,” the head coach noted. “He operates as an attacking midfielder and he is competing for his spot.”
Craig Bellamy expressed hope that Wales, who face Belgium in a crucial qualifying match on next week, take lessons from their awful performance in the opening period.
“That’s the reason I scheduled this game,” the manager said. “I wanted to assess our standing. Where do we want to go? What is our identity? This performance fills me with inspiration.”
Watkins was substituted at the break after clattering into a goalpost and will be a doubt when England play their next opponents in the Latvian capital in a World Cup qualifying match on Tuesday.
