UN Removes Penalties on President of Syria Ahead of Presidential Visit

Security Council representatives approved to a US resolution removing restrictions on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa ahead of his White House visit the following week.

Sharaa was named interim leader after leading a rebel offensive that ousted Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, ending 13 years of domestic strife.

Washington's ambassador UN ambassador Mike Waltz said the UN had sent "a powerful diplomatic message" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a fresh chapter" since Assad was deposed.

Sharaa was under United Nations restrictions while commanding the Muslim faction HTS, once connected to the extremist organization. America delisted the organization from the catalog of international terrorist organizations during July.

More Penalties Removed

Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister Minister Anas Khattab.

Syria's foreign minister welcomed the removal of the sanctions, posting on social media: "Syria expresses its appreciation to Washington and allied countries for assisting the Syrian nation and citizens."

Imminent Washington Talks

President Sharaa's presidential meeting this coming Monday follows US President Donald Trump said the Syrian leader had made "good progress" towards bringing peace to the previously divided state.

Subsequent to their talks, Trump remarked the Syrian leader had "a legitimate chance at pulling it together".

Both presidents held discussions for the first time this past May, when Trump visited Riyadh on a tour of the region.

After that meeting, the US president described him as a "resilient figure" with a "very strong past".

His Islamist group HTS was al-Qaeda's affiliate in Syria prior to breaking relations during 2016.

Prior United States Journey

The upcoming meeting will not be the president's debut journey to America in the current year. In September, he emerged as the first Syrian leader to address the UN General Assembly in New York for nearly six decades.

In his speech, he declared the nation was "reclaiming its rightful place within the global community" and demonstrated unity with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
